It is not about conformity. It is about preparation and respect.
It is not about how good you are or have the potential to be against the competition. It is about playing by the standard rules of the game, as long as the rules aren’t meant to give you or the other side an unfair advantage.
Think along the lines of bringing a gun to a knife fight (you are severely overstepping your bounds and breaking the rules), or the reverse of bringing a knife to a gun fight (you are severely under-matched, unprepared, and probably uninformed).
You can’t play basketball while holding your hockey stick, can’t run track if you’ve dressed out for football, can’t swim laps if you’re wearing a baseball catcher’s gear. You have to dress out in the proper uniform and accessories for the proper sport, or not only will you not be allowed to play, you shouldn’t be allowed to play.
Don’t blame racism, ageism, classism, or any of the other isms that seem to be created every day if the ism is not the issue. Did you come ready to play? Did you come suited up and prepared to go into the game? Are you willing to wait your turn and show the world what you’ve got when you get that call from the bench?
